Fata Narrat: Short Stories

Unsanctioned Propulsion

Monica Buckley floated through the zero-gravity corridor of the spaceship, her boots magnetically clinging to the floor as she adjusted the maintenance panel. She had been assigned to fix a faulty air recycler, a task that should have been routine.

But when she opened the panel, she found a sealed container labeled 'Restricted' - a clear violation of the ship's protocols. Monica hesitated. The container was not supposed to be there.

She could report it, but that would mean dealing with the ship's strict bureaucracy and possibly losing her position. Or she could ignore it, and risk the consequences if the container was somehow dangerous.

Monica made her choice. She opened the container and found a stack of unsanctioned engineering blueprints - that could revolutionize the ship's propulsion system.

The next morning, Monica was called to a meeting with Arturo Cahill, the ship's chief engineer. He looked at her with a mix of surprise and suspicion.

'You found those blueprints?' he asked. 'I did,' Monica said, her voice steady.

Arturo sighed and leaned back in his chair. 'This could be a problem, Monica. Those blueprints are not approved by the ship's administration.'

Monica felt the weight of the moment. She had broken the rules, but she had also uncovered something that could change the future of the ship. She looked at Arturo and nodded.

The ship's corridors buzzed with talk of Monica Buckley's discovery, and the administrative machine was set in motion. Monica found herself at the center of a new kind of chaos - one that had started with a single choice.

Weeks later, Monica stood in the engineering bay, watching as the ship's propulsion system hummed with newfound efficiency. The blueprints had been modified and submitted for review, and the bureaucratic machine had shifted - because of one quiet act of defiance.

Monica's hands trembled slightly as she signed off on the final modifications. She had made a choice, and it had changed the ship. She had also changed herself.
