Fata Narrat: Short Stories

Nina and the Debt

The air in the valley of Kaelor was always heavy, thick with the scent of moss and the faint metallic tang of something older than the world itself. Nina Cowan stood at the edge of the obsidian well, her boots sinking slightly into the dark, damp soil.

She had come here to make a choice, one that would bind her to the well's ancient pact and the debt she had long avoided. The well had whispered to her in dreams, its voice a low hum that resonated in her bones.

Joanna Dietrich had warned her. 'You cannot undo what you owe, Nina.' But the debt was not hers alone. It was a legacy, passed down through generations of Cowans, a debt that had never been paid.

Tucker Vigil had followed her, his presence a quiet shadow in the valley's gloom. He had no love for the well, nor for the debt it demanded, but he had come to see her through to the end.

Nina looked down at the well, its surface like black glass, reflecting the pale light of the valley's twin moons. She knew what she had to do.

She reached into her satchel and pulled out the obsidian shard, its edges sharp and cold against her palm. The shard had been carved from the well itself, a fragment of its ancient power.

Nina pressed the shard to the well's surface, and the world around her seemed to hold its breath. A ripple spread across the well's surface, and the valley trembled.

The well's voice rose, a low, resonant hum that filled the air and pressed against her chest. 'You have chosen to pay the debt, Nina Cowan.'

The ground beneath her feet cracked, and a wave of darkness surged from the well, swallowing the valley in shadow. Nina felt the weight of the debt lift from her shoulders, but something else took its place.

Tucker grabbed her arm, his grip tight. 'Nina, what have you done?' She looked at him, her eyes dark with something she could not name.

The valley of Kaelor was no longer the same. The well had been sealed, its ancient pact fulfilled, but the cost had been paid in silence.

The moss that had once blanketed the valley had turned to dust, and the air was now thin and cold. The valley had become a place of echoes, where the past whispered to the present.

Nina looked back at the well, now a dark, lifeless pit, and felt the weight of her choice settle in her chest. She had undone the debt, but not the cost.

Tucker stood beside her, his expression unreadable. 'You've changed the valley forever.' Nina nodded. 'I know.'

The valley of Kaelor would never be the same again. And neither would she.
