Fata Narrat: Short Stories

Draft of Kinley's Second Book

Tristen Blum stood at the edge of the park, his hands tucked into the pockets of his worn-out jacket. The autumn leaves crunched underfoot as he stared at the bench where Kinley Mercado sat, her back to him.

She was reading a book, her fingers tracing the edges of the pages as if the words might slip away. Tristen had seen her here before, always alone, always with that same book.

He had never spoken to her, not really. But today, something in him shifted, a quiet resolve hardening behind his ribs.

He stepped forward, the crunch of leaves echoing in the still air. Kinley looked up, her eyes narrowing as if she already knew what was coming.

Tristen hesitated, then spoke. 'You're reading the same book I was given when I arrived here.' Kinley's expression didn't change, but her fingers tightened around the book.

Tyrone Mullins appeared at the edge of the park, his presence a steady anchor in the shifting air. He had been watching, as he often did, his arms crossed over his chest.

Tristen turned to him, his voice low. 'I need to tell her.' Tyrone's eyes flicked to Kinley, then back to Tristen. 'You know what that means.'

Tristen nodded. 'I do.' He looked back at Kinley, who was now watching him with quiet intensity.

He took a breath and said, 'I was never supposed to be here.' Kinley's eyes widened slightly, but she didn't speak.

Tyrone stepped forward, his voice calm but firm. 'You know the consequences.' Tristen met his gaze. 'I do.'

Kinley closed the book and set it on the bench beside her. She looked at Tristen, her voice quiet but steady. 'Then tell me.'

Tristen sat down beside her, the weight of the moment pressing into his chest. He told her everything - the name he had been given, the life he had been denied.

Kinley listened, her face unreadable, but her hands trembled slightly. When he finished, she looked at him, her voice soft. 'You could have left.'

Tristen shook his head. 'I couldn't.' He looked at Tyrone, who was watching them both with quiet understanding.

Kinley stood and picked up the book. She handed it to Tristen. 'You're not alone anymore.'
